Welcome to epi-informatics @ U of S

We are a cross-disciplinary team of researchers with a range of skills and interests from the statistical, computing and information sciences. The aim of the group is to provide a better understanding of epidemiology (disease in populations - hence the epi) through the application of a range of quantitative tools and techniques applied to the problem domain using computer systems (hence the informatics). The group has a particular interest in working with data driven models of disease which involve increasingly large and complex data-sets.

To effectively harness the epidemiological knowledge contained within such data-sets requires that we apply a range of informatics- based approaches: database management techniques to formally model and store data; computer-based visualisation for exploratory data analysis; statistical modelling and simulation for disease transmission and control dynamics; expert systems and other decision support techniques to capture and deliver knowledge of disease diagnosis, treatment and management.

Group philosopy

The group is led by George Gettinby (Statistics and Modelling Science ) and Crawford Revie (Computer and Information Sciences) at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. The group adopts a 'craft' approach to the research it is commissioned to carry out - as opposed to a 'mass production' mentality, which we find incompatible with high quality scientific investigation. We will typically have a small portfolio of research projects at any given time, all of which will include some direct involvement of one (and often both!) of the group leaders. Feel free to explore our web area to find out more about the epi-informatics group's philosophy and membership, our current and past projects, our international partners, or our recent news...
